Twilight is held on a Thursday evening from 5.30pm during the summer months, commencing the first Thursday in November and running through until approximately mid-March with a few weeks off over Christmas and New Year.

Shotguns

Shotguns are generally used for game birds or for clay target shooting.  Because shotguns have a cartridge with many small pellets (rather than a single projectile), they are excellent for hunting game such as duck, pheasants and geese when they are flying.

The most common types of shotguns are “under and over” meaning that they can have a cartridge in each barrel (the top or bottom barrel – hence the name under and over).  These shotguns are also called a break open as they hinge to load or unload.  The most popular shotgun for game bird hunting is a semi-automatic which is a single barrel but with a magazine that can take up to 5 rounds, or a pump action.  Pump action shotguns are also a single barrel with a magazine that is activated by a pumping action.

All shotguns are smooth inside the barrel, and the firing mechanism of a shotgun round is very similar to a centrefire whereby the firing pin hits a primer in the centre of the base of the cartridge. 

Remember that when a shotgun is fired, the area of the shot coverage is much wider than that of a rifle,  however the pellets only travel approximately 250 metres.
